How to use a Foam Roller

Are you intrigued by the “foam roller”? You should be! It’s a wonderful tool for rolling out and relaxing your muscles You can use a foam roller to relieve tightness in your muscles, and relax!
It’s the perfect way to relax before bed, or any time throughout the day that you feel tense. It’s a wonderful stress reliever.

Here are a few exercises to try

To Loosen Hip Flexors

In addition to doing your Fittbe Yogalates, Relive tightness in your hip flexors by moving the foam roller up to the front of your hip, then gently rotate your body so that more focus is on the front of one of your hips. Gently roll back and forth, and then switch sides.

For Tight Quads

Lay on your stomach with the foam roller under your quads. Gently roll yourself forward and backward using your toes.

For Calf Muscles, especially after Barre or Running

Bring yourself to a seated position and place the foam roller under your calves. Roll front and back (and of course remember to keep your abs engaged here!)

For a Tense Upper Back

To relax tension in your upper back, lie in a sit up position, with the foam roller placed under your upper back. Use your legs to carefully roll out your upper back as it feels comfortable. Don’t roll all the way up to your precious neck!

For Tight Quads

Lay on your stomach with the foam roller under your quads. Gently roll yourself forward and backward using your toes.

To relax a tight lower back

For lower back tension, which is so common, lie on your back, and gently roll up and down through your spine keeping your abdominals engaged.

For Tight Hamstrings

In a seated position, bend one knee upward with your foot planted on the floor. Place the foam roller under your other hamstring. With your core engaged, roll yourself from and back.

Rolling your IT band to prevent knee pain

To combat a tight IT band, which can be a major source of outside knee pain particularly for runners, lie on your side with your feet together (like a side plank, but lowered to the mat). Gently roll the outside of your hip, then switch sides.
