Learn a bit more about Johann Sebastian Bach:
Johann Sebastian Bach, a towering figure of the Baroque era, composed works that reveal deep insights into the human experience. His meticulously crafted music elevates both the soul and the intellect, encouraging reflection on life’s fleeting nature and the hope of eternal salvation—a theme often emphasized by the inscription Soli Deo Gloria (“Glory to God alone”) found on many of his scores, whether sacred or secular. Born in 1685 in the German town of Eisenach into a vast musical family, Bach’s early years as a chorister and church organist provided him with essential training. His extraordinary creativity and unparalleled skill in counterpoint influenced nearly every musical genre of his time, from sacred cantatas and organ compositions to vibrant concertos like the Brandenburg Concertos and Four Orchestral Suites. In 1723, after years of serving noble patrons, Bach was appointed music director at St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig. In just five years, he composed nearly 150 church cantatas, including Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, a majestic Magnificat, and the monumental St. John and St. Matthew Passions—all significant achievements in sacred music. Yet, even these monumental works alone would have ensured his legacy; Bach also created an unparalleled array of masterpieces, including the Mass in B Minor, the Goldberg Variations, and The Art of Fugue.
